How to say gay in Somali
Below are the words of our Somali Gay Dictionary that we will expand in new editions. If you know any more, please, contact us. But first some information about the language and where it is spoken.
Somali language, belonging to the Afro-Asiatic family, is spoken in Somalia and neighboring countries by a number of estimated speakers from 12 to 18 million.
The situation of LGBT people in Somalia is terrible and their lives are in danger. It does not matter if we talk about Somalia or Somaliland (the northern part not recognized as an independent state): the state is weak; and the maintenance of colonial laws on the one hand and radical Islamic extremism on the other, show a bleak panorama. The only LGBT organization, Queer Somalia, is in Ethiopia and another group works from the United Kingdom. The Somali Gay Organization has not updated its Facebook page since 2014. In general, Somalia’s population relates homosexuality as something to be killed and sex as something taboo that is not talked about.
There are also those who say they want to help: in 2010 Human Rights Report from the U.S. Department affirmed that in Somalia “there were no reports of societal violence or discrimination based on sexual orientation.”
