How to say gay in Visayan
Below is the word of our Visayan Gay Dictionary that we will expand in new editions. If you know any more, please, contact us. But first some information about the language and where it is spoken.
Visayan is a language of Austronesian family, spoken mainly in the Philippines, where it is the official language, by more than thirty million people.
The Philippines is one of the countries that most accept sexual diversity, probably because, in pre-colonial times, homosexual behavior and transgender people were integrated into their culture. The colonization both Islamic and Christian and its rejection of diversity could cause a reinforcement in favor of diversity, although finally, 40 years of American occupation ended up establishing a negative view of homosexuality. This could explain that although the surveys show a great acceptance of homosexuality by the population, there have been no legislative changes that protect LGBT rights, or that the majority of respondents do not accept the equal marriage. The activism was developed from the 90s and so the first LGBT pride was held in 1994.
