Bulgarian is an Indo-European language of the southern branch of the Slavic languages and it is written with the Cyrillic alphabet. It is the official language of Bulgaria which is closely related to the Macedonian language by its socio-cultural and historical development. In their diversity has gotten rich with archaic words and international as well as typical words of each region near its borders (Turkey, Greece, Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Romania) as you can see in our Bulgarian lesbian dictionary.
In Bulgaria, as part of the Ottoman Empire, homosexuality was legalized in 1858, but after its liberation, it was again criminalized. In 1968 it was legalized again because it was considered an involuntary and painfully disease, but not a crime. At present, the society of Bulgaria is in a process of change and acceptance of sexual diversity. Marriage and adoption are not allowed, but there are several LGBT associations and gay pride is celebrated since 2008.
