Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language of the Uralic family, spoken by just over a million people, mostly in Estonia.
Estonia is considered the most liberal country in the Baltic countries that belonged to the former Soviet Union, where homosexual relations were forbidden. Shortly after its independence, in 1992, homosexuality was legalized and gradually anti-discrimination legislation was passed and some rights were granted. One of its greatest achievements has been the legalization, in 2016, of a cohabitation agreement that grants almost the same rights as heterosexual couples, except for joint adoption. Society is polarized according to age, being young people and the least linked to Russia, the one that most accepts sexual diversity. Gay pride has been celebrated since 2004 and they have participated in the Baltic Pride since 2009.
