Serbian is a language of the Indo-European family, spoken mainly in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Montenegro by 12 million persons.

The situation of the LGBT community in Serbia is not good because of the high degree of homophobia in society. In 2006 the new constitution defined marriage as that celebrated between a man and a woman and has not yet been able to legalize equal civil unions. Although there are anti-discrimination and anti-hate speech laws, aggression and discrimination are frequent. The beginning of the celebration of the Pride of Belgrade (2001) was difficult due to the counter-demonstrations and the attacks of homophobic extremists that far surpassed the LGBT protesters. Pride was not celebrated for several years because the administration could not guarantee security, although since 2014 it has been held every year. In 2017 the Belgian Pride had the participation of its first minister, Ana Brnabić, openly lesbian. The latest surveys conducted by ILGA show a positive change in the acceptance of sexual diversity in Serbia.
