  • Words will mean different things at different times and in different places. My late 20th century UK take on the meaning of ‘nelly queen’ was a gay man who is unconsciously stereotypically ‘feminine’ in mannerisms and emotions in contrast to ‘drag queens’ who were more conscious of their take on the ‘feminine’ stereotype and more likely to be assertive in a stereotypically ‘masculine’ way. Obviously the categories I’ve made are not mutually exclusive but I think the distinction is valid.

    • The secret life of words, we use them and they mutate. In this case, the difference, besides the surname queen, lies in the unconsciousness of femininity. Thank you very much for the suggestion, I will include it in our dictionary.
