Greek

Adherfí (Αδερφή)

The literal translation of Adherfí (Αδερφή) is sister and it is a derogatory expression to refer to homosexual men. Relating gays to female relatives is a frequent fact in many languages, such as the Japanese word Onee, which means older sister, or the English word Aunt. The feminization is evident, however with the relationship with the family bond we can not do more than speculate. It may have to do with the situation that effeminate homosexual men lived not many years ago when the bachelorhood and the cohabitation with the family were almost inevitable issues. Calling them “your sister” or “my aunt” jokingly can be the origin of this type of expression.
