K’ewsa

K’ewsa is a term of Quechua / Aymara origin used in Bolivia today with the pejorative meaning of homosexual or effeminate man, although we have found translated as a coward, coward who beats women, chueco (twisted) and other items that indicate inappropriate behavior.

It is a term that has become the center of the debate on homosexual behavior in pre-Columbian societies, between those who argue that homosexuality is imported and therefore deny that the word meant something like “homosexual” in origin, and those who see in the existence of this term, a clear evidence to the contrary.

Beyond the absurd and outdated that it seems the debate, the first reference we have found is from 1612, in which the term K’ewsa or K’iwsa is related to homosexual behavior. In the vocabulary of the Aymara Language of Ludovico Bertonio, K’iwsa is translated as “patient in the nefarious sin” that is, who is fucked, the bottom in anal intercourse, and K’iwsa Jucha, as nefarious sin (sodomy), being the term jucha the Aymara term for sin.
